1 Lord, how they have increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me. 2 Many are they who say of me, “There is no help for him in God.” Selah 3 But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head. 4 I cried to the Lord with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill. Selah 5 I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me. 6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me all around. 7 Arise, O Lord; Save me, O my God! For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone; You have broken the teeth of the ungodly. 8 Salvation belongs to the Lord. Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah | Sometimes, when in life we are overwhelmed, we sometimes feel as though our troubles are too many and we often forget that these are menial (right context or no?) things compared to what God can handle so we don't need to worry. People may even say that 'there is no God' but Psalm 14:1 says 'the fool hath said in his heart "there is no God" ' and so we can be assured that whatever we go through God will be there to guide and keep us {remember Psalm 139:10 "Your hand shall lead me and your right hand shall hold me"} Which leads so nicely into v3 "You, O Lord, are a Shield for me" and then my personal favourite: "I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me" This is so so powerful! Even David, the psalmist, lost sleep over his troubles, at the time this was written he was fleeing from his son Absalom so to think that God can keep us and calm us enough that even at times of greatest distress he can let us sleep, and awake. In our lives, the 10,000's of people represent the worries and fears we have and that we need not be troubled but cast all our cares on him { 1 Pet. 5:7 }. And verse 8 just sums everything up so perfectly, that when we are saved, our lives may be troubled on Earth but in Heaven is blessing and his glory for eternity :) |
