So, my first exam is tomorrow... pretty scary stuff. I'm just sat at home on bed, not really sure what to think of this so I thought I may as well make a blog post of it and collect my thoughts together before heading off to bed. Having never really experienced "real " exams before, this is kind of a new feeling for me. I don't really know what to make of it. My friend explained it really well the other day though, its the feeling (I'd imagine) that you'd get just as a huge wave hits you and you're just like, well not much I can do about it now. Thinking about that, there's actually quite a lot you can do, in the case of the wave, apparently, if you dive into the wave instead of running away, you can go through it instead of getting knocked over. That is actually quite a good analogue of exams. You can either go at it head on, having prepared by revising etc or you can run away from it and inevitably get knocked on your feet. Arguably, I haven't really had the most productive day (I may have just spent the last hour eating chocolate and reading Harry Potter) but I did do some french revision and if only a little, it was better than none. Sometimes you might think, well I've done all I can when that's not the way to think about it until after the exam, before then, there is always something you can do. You can do revision, ask any questions you may have to your teachers or even just chat to your friend to calm your nerves. My first exam is Art and some people (ahem) have said (jokely) "It'll be fine, you just have to draw stuff don't you?" when yes, that is true but its the same as any exam in that if you don't prepare and do the course work, you won't do as well as you could have. Calming nerves is something I seem to have gotten control of pretty well over the past few years. Probably one of the best ways is talking to someone, even if you don't feel like it. Call a friend or talk to siblings if you have them. Another way is to get away from it. For example, if your revising and you get stressed, go for a walk to clear your head and change your surroundings. If its just before and exam, go for a walk around your school to get away from the rabble of kids radiating nervousness (don't be late though, for obvious reasons). I think getting all that out has helped me and hopefully someone else reading this. All the best if you have exams coming up :) |
